Two Great Finales

Wow. Tonight had some great TV shows. The Season Finale of American Idol was really good. In addition to seeing all the previous winners of American Idol on stage (except Fantasia who is working on Broadway), they had Tony Bennett, Gladys Night, Smokie Robinson, Bette Midler, Gwen Stefani, Green Day, Joe Perry among others. There were some really fun bits including a beat box duet between Blake Lewis and Doug E Fresh. All 12 of the finalists this season were also on stage. It was great to see some of them again. The show ended with a really nice Beatles medley starting all the past winners and the current top 12. Of course, Jordin won. No one was surprised there. But I’m sure a lot fo talent this year will get CDs.

Carrie Underwood got a lot of face time. She has become the most successful Idol to date, apparently. The good news is Taylor’s CD went platinum and Chris Daughtry’s CD sold 3 million units so far. Katherine McPhee’s has done well, also. They didn’t even mention Bucky an Kellie’s CDs, which have also been a success.

I can’t say I wanted to see Sanjaya’s solo (I’d rather hear that Bush Baby dude sing), nor did I care much for Kelly Clarkson’s new single, which sounds lie an attempt at “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morrisette. But boy, did Smokey Robinson have good plastic surgery or what? I guess botox works for some people.

Gladys Knight sounded great. It was nice to see her hug Melinda at the end. Melinda is a big fan. Frankly, the Knight medley was excellent from beginning to end.

And Lost, man did they turn in a good episode. It was full of great twists and turns with a powerful surprise ending.  They really pulled this show out of the doldrums in the last six or seven episodes. 24 writers, take note! My only complaint is, Charlie could have shut the hatch door behind him. He didn’t have to stay inside.

Now I wonder what happens next. I have a feeling the rescue might be something else entirely. Will the next season have them back home with flashbacks to the island? Hmm.

  2. The guys sounded great with Smokey.  Melinda and Lakisha were amazing with Gladys.  Hated Kelly, and Jordin and Reuben, and Clive (especially for going on and on about Daughtry). Enjoyed Blake with Doug. E. Fresh. Loved Taylor, also the African Children’s Choir!  Carrie was okay. I like Bette, but she sounded a little rough. I don’t even want to talk about Sanjaya.

They should have invited Prince back.  He knows how to make an entrance.  And an exit.

  3. Lost’s finale was really good, it leaves the show open to some changes which I hope the writers take advantage of.

So now we get a flash foward.  This a great idea b/c the flashbacks were getting a bit stale.  This leaves it open to show us what happened with everyone.  Maybe they all will want to go back to the island b/c their lives were better off.  I concur about your thoughts for next season. Will it be on the island with flash backs and flash fowards, or will we see them off the island and the island will be the flash back?

I’m also glad that Ben lived.  He was by far the most interesting character this season with so much more to explain in his background.

  4. I just couldn’t get into American Idol this year.  Though I did follow the weekly results on your (and one other) blog.  I think their ratings may have peaked with Season 5.  Now THAT was a great season!  It will be interesting to see if the summer tour sells out like last year.  I taped last night’s finale only to hear Taylor Hicks sing and fast forwarded through the rest of the show.  Did you catch his quick little greeting to the Soul Patrol?  Last season was magical!  Love you website.  Keep up the good work.

  5. I caught that Soul Patrol shout out in the second viewing. I think his new song may be the one to make it for him. It’s more like something we’d expect from Taylor. Plus, the exposure won’t hurt, either.

  6. Both Jordin and Blake have 5-song EPs up on iTunes now - I think the real vote will be in seeing which one stays in the top 10 longest, or if they can even begin to compete against Daughtry, who is still there.

Glad Jordin won it. She’s an amazing young talent and fully deserved it. Blake will do all right too, I expect…
