Whew

Still getting things together here. The weather is wonderful and it’s nice to walk around downtown Vancouver during lunch time. I am already getting a lot more exercise since I came here.

I don’t have a house yet. I am suppose dto get one later in the month so I have been staying with a friend. It’s kind of weird not having my own place. But I will soon.

Today I went and got a new mail box. But what a hassle that was. The post office wouldn’t give me one without a permanent address here. And so I got a box at a local mail box business and then the post office said I couldn’t change my address to that because it was a business and my old address was a home. Now I have to deal with that bureaucratic BS. What a hassle.

I have to say I like the change of scenery a lot. It’s really beautiful at this time of the year. I feel right at home here. It reminds me of Sonoma County, California, where I am from. But with 5 times the trees.

Vancouver, Wa is a small town across the Columbia river from Portland. It’s very small town USA, which is fine with me. I like it a lot. Portland is a very lovely city in its own way, with lots of cool restaurants and places to check out. Not to mention the most bridges I have ever seen in a town. My friend lives in the hills above the city in a very lush area, so its very peaceful to come home and kick back by the koi pond and read a book. On the way to and from work I drive through 23rd street, which is a very trending part of town with lots of cool shops and eateries (and no parking anywhere!). I will be checking all of this out in due course and take some pictures.

  1. Have fun exploring, James. I’m sure you know about Powell’s Bookstore, which I think I heard was the largest in the US? And be sure to have a pint or two at the Widmer Brewery.

  2. Yes, Powell’s is the biggest independent book store in the US. Haven’t be there yet, but its on my way home so I will check it out.

  4. I’m jealous!!!! Sounds WONDERFUL!!! I live in the Space Coast of Fl, one ugly, boring place. Hot & sticky. No seasons. Enjoy James!

  5. So glad you made it safe and sound.  Enjoy exploring your new community.  It is always exciting to discover new places.
It’s great that you have a friend there that can’t help you with the best location to live.

  6. Mike,

Rain doesn’t bother me. But if it keeps away more people from moving here, all the better.

  7. A warning about Powell’s: Don’t bring a credit card, and bring only as much cash as you’re willing to spend.
    Seriously.
    That place is dangerous.
