Why Oil?
If you’re wondering why oil is still so widely used as an energy source, it’s not a conspiracy and it’s not rocket science. Oil provides the biggest bang for the buck. It’s cheap.
This graphic does a great job of explaining the power of oil. One cubic mile of oil is equal to 52 nuclear power plants operating for 50 years. Yeah. And see how one mile of oil translates into other forms of energy. It has all of them beat.
I still say we need to get off oil ASAP. But as long as its cheap and abundant, that’s not going to be a priority.
The energy density is low compared to fission, but it’s much easier to access. “Alternate energy” powered commercial aircraft are a long way off, that’s for sure.
