Wilhelm
It comes from a 1940s western. Named after an extra who yelled a certain way when shot by an arrow in a scene. It’s been used a lot by film makers ever since.
I’ve come to hate that damnable scream. Takes me out of every me movie I see.

Posted by on 10/08 at 09:29 PMIt’s become a sound-engineer in-joke....from what I’ve read, it was Ben Burtt who researched it and re-popularized it in the late ‘70s in the Star Wars films…
Posted by on 10/09 at 04:48 AMIt’s an in joke that has passed way into the tired cliché territory long ago.
Of course, I always though the Wilhelm yell was another scream you hear all the time, usually when people fall from great heights. It’s a longer, deeper sound. One use I can think of off the top of my head is in the movie the Living Daylights where James Bond kicks a killer off a bag of heroin over Afghanistan and he falls away screaming. I’ve heard that yell in a ton of movies.
