DC Comics initially published the Psycho in 1991. James Hudnall wrote it and illustrated by Daniel Brereton. A trade collecting the work is available from Image Comics.
The story concerns a CIA agent named Jake Riley, who’s assigned to watching super-humans, nicknamed “psychos”, that work for foreign governments. Jake is posted in an eastern European nation in the Balkans. The government there is giving a tax haven to super-humans. Jake is set to watch them, but when he’s exposed as an agent, Jake is hunted. To survive, he has to become the one thing he despises most to survive. He becomes a psycho.
The story was way ahead of its time but is much copied today. A film version is still in development.
The art was entirely painted by superb illustrator Daniel Brereton.
