  1. Okay, I was wrong with my post on your last strip. I was saying the jokes were generic and you could replace “Bush” for “Obama” and there would be no change to the structure of the strip (try it with this one, it works perfectly). I was putting your strip into the category of political satire but it’s not. If you were a stand up you wouldn’t be Mort Sahl, you’d be Don Rickles. You’re doing insult comedy not based on the actions of the person but the broad stereotypes or just calling them stupid . That’s not a bad thing, it’s a legit form of jokery. It’s not for me, but other folks seem to like it and I’m sorry I was taking you to task for being something you’re not. It would be like getting mad at the Three Stooges for not being a romantic comedy (though there was some heat between Larry and Shemp if you read between the lines). Best of luck with the strip and Happy Birthday.

    • Ian, thanks for the wishes, but the strip is whatever I feel like that week. It has been varied the whole time. You can look at the archives.

Sometimes I just want to point out something. Humor is not always the goal. Sometimes, it’s just to make a statement and suggest a different way of looking at an issue. The msm/white house push a one sided view of things. We’re providing a different context for an issue.

A political cartoon isn’t always funny. Most of them aren’t funny at all. I have been studying political cartoons since I was a kid. I decided to try my hand at it and experiment with the medium. Everything I do since I started has been a learning process. I want to try different things.

Sorry, but this isn’t trying to be the Three Stooges or trying to be Mort Sahl, But I’m flattered you feel compelled to comment.

When someone says the cartoons aren’t funny, I just shrug. I am not always trying to be funny. Sometimes it’s just snark. Sometimes it’s a wink or a nudge. But it’s also not aimed at Democrat’s sensibilities, so I am not surprised when Obama fans get annoyed with it and feel a need to tell me I am “doing it wrong”. I am of the opinion that if it gets a reaction, it worked. It doesn’t matter if the reaction is good or bad. The point of art is to make the audience feel or think something. .

My goal has always been to try to get people to see the world in a different way. Because I for one am dissatisfied with the narrative we’re given.

  2. I’m not saying your cartoons aren’t funny, Batton draws them for humour. The ears are huge and the poses are melodramatically over the top. Saying they’re not funny would be opinion. Saying Batton draws things in a funny way isn’t. I can break down the style he uses to show that.
What I’m saying is you don’t seem to be writing a political satire. You’re not taking events specific to the current president and commenting on them. You’re doing insult comedy. The kind you’d have at a Friar’s Roast. The same fat jokes would apply to whatever celebrity was fat currently and the tramp jokes to whoever that applies to. Cross out the old name and write in the new.
This comic you’ve got above would work just as well with Bush as the target. Almost every other comic does the same. Obama at the beach not dealing with problems would be Bush clearing brush. I’m not a Democrat. I’m Canadian so it’s not even an option. But I am a comedian and this is the kind of material a comedian does when they’re starting out, they tell street jokes. If you were a musician and played a song that I’d heard before and called it your own I’d tell you. I’m not saying the material is plagiarized. I’m saying it’s very close to public domain joke book material. This wouldn’t be a problem if both you and Batton didn’t do such unique material in your other work. This is the last time I’ll be posting. Best of luck to you in all future projects.

    • That’s where we disagree. Maybe on this one, yeah, but many of them, if not most are specific to what happened that week. Such as the one that just ran, where Obama gives a terrible speech and Biden falls asleep.

I am not a comedian. But I know how to say something funny or make a funny observation. The fact is, when you do that some people will get you and others will either be offended or shrug,. The dame thing goes for comics, who can do well one place and bomb the next evening with the same material, different crowd.

The point of political satire is to reveal some truth as you the storyteller see it, about the target. That is what we aim to do, expose some aspect of the president that the media does not because they are too busy propping him up. The reason I didn’t do Bush cartoons, besides the fact I wasn’t doing cartoons then, was the media was lambasting him at every turn and so was almost everyone else. No one was touching Obama when we started this. I like the road less traveled. I also hate group think and the cult of personality.
