Why Osama Should Have Been Captured, Not Killed

I wrote an article for Big Peace today about why I think Osama Bin Laden should have been renditioned rather than aired out. Ultimately, this is a what if article, but I think the arguments need to be said. For all the talk of Bush being a cowboy I think he would have extracted Osama instead of killing him. He was too valuable a target and could have provided extremely valuable intel. He was the leader of Al Qaeda, after all.

While I didn’t get into it in the article, but the handling of the follow-up has been a typical Obama mess. Confused narratives, lack of transparency, the usual cluster frickazee.

  1. Describing the Obama follow-up as a clusterfuck is as charitable as a sane person could call this…

On top of the birth certificate mess, they can’t release one stupid uncontestable photo of a dead corpse???

AND Obama can’t be gracious enough to give the last White House any credit for the alleged OBL takedown?

This is the brilliant man of “hope and change?”

Bugs Bunny said it best — “what a maroon!”

  2. Summary execution of an unarmed person in a sovereign country is against all the tenets of international law. The law must be upheld notwithstanding who the personalities or circumstances are, otherwise we drift into anarchy and stoop to the level of the terrorists we purport to fight.

    • And what do you call assaults on innocents civilians in the middle of a populous city?

So this one vile, miserable human being is more valuable than the thousands he’s orchestrated deaths of over the years????

      You’re friggin’ naive!

No way would we have gotten help from the Pakistanis… they were harboring OBL!

What planet do you live on???

Grow up and stop smelling your own farts for once…

The world’s sometimes better for the loss of some individuals.

OBL is not worth crying a river over. I wouldn’t celebrate his death, either, because it gives the SOB more attention than his life was ever worth…

      • Actually, George, he has a point. The point is, we’re supposed to represent law and justice. They are either lying about what happened or a complete joke because of the way they have handled the aftermath. It looks like some kind of cover up the way they got rid of the body AT SEA (Pakistan is a land locked country, so they had to go WAY out of their way to do that). By brining him to justice we would have been more lawful and civilized. I know what you’re saying, he wasn’t civilized, but that’s the point. We need to show the world we are better than they are. If we act like them, our standards become meaningless.

    • I think we had a responsibility to capture him and try him, to uphold the rule of law and show why we’re different than terrorists. They didn’t walk into a gun fight. It has come out that there may not have been any shooting except on our side. One picture of the dead bodies shows a guy lying next to a squirt gun. That’s probably why there has been so many changes to their story and why the video of the critical moments has been “lost” or as they say, “blacked out”.

You’re right that by sending the message that we can just go in an kill people, no matter how heinous, that it’s right. Maybe if it was a battle, but the way this is shaping up, it sounds more like a hit job.

  3. The precedent set by the US in undermining the sovereignty of a nation and assassinating an unarmed person is contrary to international law and must not go unchallenged. Otherwise we give free reign to anarchy. What is to Israel murdering anyone anywhere, or Sarah Palin going in to kill Ahmadinejad or for that matter the Prime Minister of Iraq gunning for George Bush for crimes against humanity?
The law must be upheld notwithstanding the personalities or circumstances involved. President Obama’s belligerence and eagerness to demonstrate his American credentials should not be allowed to overrule civilised behaviour. We cannot stoop to the level of the terrorists we purport to fight.
Geoffrey Robertson the famous human rights lawyer said that US President Barack Obama should not have said that bin Laden”s death meant “justice”” had been done. “It”s not justice. It”s a perversion of the term. Justice means taking someone to court, finding them guilty upon evidence and sentencing them,””
“This man has been subject to summary execution, and what is now appearing after a good deal of disinformation from the White House is it may well have been a cold-blooded assassination,”” he added.
Robertson further said: “The way to demystify him, rather than to see these soulful pictures of the tall man on the mountain, is to put him on trial, to see him as a hateful and hate-filled old man screaming from the dock or lying in the witness box.”
The latest twist of the story from the White House is that only one person in the house was armed and he fired at the 40 Navy Seals.
The Americans have got it wrong again!

    • It just goes to show statists are statists, “left” or “right” leaning. They think the law only applies to others. What they did was an act of war, which we would still be in except, Obama claimed the war on terror was over not too long ago.

      • You gotta love Arshad’s, thinking, Hud!

Just shows how out-of-touch with reality and lacking in common sense Mr. Statist is there!

Once you leave your country’s borders, you are OUT OF PROTECTION OF ITS LAWS.
You can cry me a river all you want and quote Geneva conventions and a bunch of other legalese B.S., but in my many cases your overseas embassy can do next-to-nothing if some individuals decide to abduct or kill you.

At least half the countries on this planet operate on something like a feudal/medieval level. Yes, they’re 1,000 years behind in thinking of the West. It’s not condescension — it’s the reality of what we deal with every day on this planet. The people in these countries DO NOT think or appreciate a lot things that are taken for granted in the West because the people are desperately poor, they’re mostly illiterate and ignorant of anything outside their society, and they are just trying to survive. In plain English, they’re rednecks….! Their governments are definitely NOT enlightened and the last thing they’re going to be concerned about with all their problems — unless they have a legitimate concern their foreign aid from the West WILL be cut off — is the life of another human being… especially a foreigner.

Your reasoning is academic, Arshad… The people in these countries have other things to worry about and really don’t give a shit about your education and philosophy.

You can debate the application and use of power all you want but at the end of the day that’s all these people appreciate and respect. IF you demonstrate that your country has no backbone and is all hot air and huff, they WILL NOT respect you. HOWEVER, if you demonstrate you WILL back up your words AND carry out the use of force WHEN they cross you, that’s respected.

This works for BOTH the good guys AND the bad guys. Fact is, if Western European powers had SHOWN SOME BACKBONE back before World War II started, the German Nazis might have backed down and not been so bold in Europe. It never ceases to amaze me that the majority of Europeans (and an increasing amount of Americans) think you can appease and continue to pay bullies lunch money or “just talk things out.” That just emboldens bullies and they will keep taking from you for as long as you let them.

There are some people you cannot reason with on your level… their society is just that alien and completely different in philosophy. You can try being nice to people but they still lie to your face and WILL stab you in the back if you give them that chance.

Doesn’t matter if the civilized likes the use of force or not… Fact is we’re dealing with a less civilized segment of the world that doesn’t appreciate much else.
