I’ve always thought that the rivalry between Betamax and VHS was similar to the one between Mac and PC computers, and what the engineer did not reference was the fact that SONY controlled their format, while VHS machines were eventually made by any number of manufacturers — just as Apple would not license their format, while anyone could build a PC.

    It is worth mentioning that eventually later BetaMax machines could play or record up to 3 hours, but vhs ultimately reached an 8 hour capacity, albeit at diminished recording quality.

    What enabled Apple to escape the fate of the BetaMax is that Apple became compatible with PC programs and software. Also, as things increasingly moved to the Internet, software compatibility became a less important issue anyway.
